Amazing post! As I'm currently freelancing in my home office, I'm following the 1h-per-day process to try out new things and so far it's been a wonderful experience.

I'm a strong believer in setting time aside to test out new things & innovate.

At our office we have a whiteboard for ideas that pop into our heads throughout the week. Every Friday we set aside client work, pick a few of the ideas and really map them out and see what we can do with them. Some happen, some don't.

Anyways - Wonderful post. (might be one of my favorites)

Your post was very good on tools/process. The last paragraph really hit home for me. Fear of looking stupid, being left behind, and failure all dominate many of my decisions. Interestingly enough the feedback mechanisms in social media have helped me to overcome some of this. Collaboration and engagement seem to strengthen resolve in my case.

The fear of ridicule probably has something to do with the fact that way back in the olden days, there wasn't the sense of there being big-time slick design "experts" setting the trends. We were all just a bunch of geeks and creatives having a play with code and getting a pretty small audience for our experiments. Now we're in the thick of the corporatisation of the internet, and with the addition of the increased (self-)publicity of blogs, feeds, tweets, etc, launching an innovative new site feels just a bit over-exposed.
