I’ve had access to ones where pretty much everything you need to do workwise is Intranet based. You set up projects, manage staff, allocate hours, order goods, check your payslip & pension details, get news, company info, sample document templates etc. Sure, there are up front costs but after that you can run a much leaner support insfrastructure, smaller HR, centralised planning and so on.

We are looking into using Alfresco and have had several meetings about what the site should look like and how it should work functionally. We also sent a questionnaire out to the staff asking them what they would like to see on the Intranet and got some great feedback.
Reading this post has been a good checklist for me as luckily the company’s HR department are all for accessibility, updating their own content and getting more people involved.
