Social Participation as a business tool (Video)

Posted in Web strategy on: Friday, September 28, 2007 by Paul Boag

Social networks and communities are often seen as the domain of the teenage crowd with sites like YouTube and MySpace dominated by this demographic. However, community based applications are applicable to all audiences and can be a powerful tool for businesses.

Back in 2006 I spoke at refresh06. One of the presentations I gave there has since proved a popular subject and I have been asked to speak on it again a number of times in various . It is on the subject of social participation and how to use it as a and tool.

After preparing the latest incarnation for a presentation I am giving at IBM, I thought I would do a run through (as I have only limited time). Discovering the new record feature in keynote I decided to record the whole thing and upload it for all to see. Hope it is useful.

    Very good Paul!!, enjoyed that!,
It’s funny how you forget that when designing an online community, it really is a real community, and that many of the same things apply in an online community, as it would to a real one!, its probably because your looking at a screen rather than a real group of people!, luckily it takes a blog video like this to give me one of them “oh yeah, didnt think of that..” moments!.
    Thanks again!.

  • Do you know of a good tool for creating a ‘facebook’ style site? We are thinking of dabbling with a social system to allow electricians to set up their own web pages in an easy to use manner.
To be honest social participation will probably be minimal, as they will probably want to drive customers to their site, and just use the social side for discussion and distributing new specs.

@Simon, I know this post is quite old, but now you can easily create a social network in a social network like facebook. You don’t have to bother yourself with a lot of technical stuff. Just create your app and plug into fb and watch fb do the magic. Since it has the community base aready you don’t have to bother yourself with building a community from scratch.
