I've had a small twitter-like forum on a page that is regularly accessed by all users of uploadthingy. I post information on new features - and also (especially!) when stuff goes wrong. Users often ask questions which I answer immediately. The amazing thing for me is the number of posts from users saying how much they like the service. Unsolicited. And how much they appreciate the immediate responses to their questions. It may seem risky - but as you say: "be open and honest" - and even let your customers be open and honest amongst themselves. What a great way to build trust.

Really good post, I enjoyed how you covered and important topic about communicating with people, I think this is sometimes lost and people don't always react in the way they should after an issue. I think flickr realised this and have grown and come out the other side successfully.
