RE: "projects grind to a halt". I've never had a problem with design by committee or my ego getting in the way of the client's needs... But... I do get projects that grind to a halt because clients simply stop communicating. You email/call and follow-up to get their much needed feedback or approval and they are nowhere to be found. How do you rush them along to keep the project moving forward? I hate this because you never get the remaining payment unless the project concludes. Thanks for your advice.

I guess I was seeing it more as a logistical challenge. How do you gather testers? Who do you test on? Others within the client's company (not decision makers)? Friends? Strangers?
I do realize that you didn't mean to give a full rundown of how it physically happens, and that your point was more about testing in general. Still - great stuff!

I think it is just as easy for a freelancer to do as an agency. You want the designer involved in the testing anyway so he can properly understand peoples response. I think I am missing why you see it as a problem.
As for numbers. We usually try and test between 6 and 8 although there is no real logic behind those numbers other than that fits nice into a single day.

Very interesting thoughts, Paul.
What I would be interested to hear is how one might implement this as a "lone wolf" - a freelancer. I can understand how a firm might organize something like this - but I'm not sure how someone working on their own could pull it off.
Would this be something that a freelancer could put in the client's court? But then, it would be sort of a conflict of interest, wouldn't it?
Also, how large of a pool of testers do you go for?
