At WWF International we work with an interesting implementation of a liquid layout in our design (done by Clearleft and implemented by Getunik) that has proven quite effective, specially in readability.

We noticed, for example, that time spent on page has practically doubled since this design was launched about a year ago.

Wow, great link up there, I've never seen that site. I'm used to fixed width layouts, I think it gives you a lot more control. Paul, an interesting point that you brought up that I haven't thought about before. The loss of control over the layout and how you can lose the ability to lead the user visually across the page.
That's a great point and one that I will definitely consider. I guess you would be able to combat that by testing in all screen sizes as you develop the design.
Really great points, thanks.

great fluid design: http://www.vivabit.co.uk/ it also has a max-width defined so lines don't get to long and hard to read. Unfortunatelly that does not work in IE
:)

I believe the only layouts that "work" at the site below are actually hybrids. I have yet to see a purely liquid layout that makes sense.

I have yet to view a liquid design that works (show me one please). This is confounded by the fact that I normally work with my browser maximised on a wide screen 1680 x 1050 display. To me, producing liquid designed websites is like providing well laid out printed books, magazines or a newspapers in their "proper" format but also providing alternative versions printed on a toilet rolls. Not a good idea!
