Although I can see your point Katherine, this is in my opinion the worst reason to allow a bloated website. Yes this MAY lead to a small SEO benefit (although to be honest I doubt it). However, the impact on users has proven to be dramatic. Gerry McGovern did some work with Microsoft which proved that pruning back content caused a dramatic increase in user satisfaction.

This is an excellent article. I only question the remark of a "bloated" website. From an SEO perspective, you should have as many pages as possible to ensure more keywords are out there as bait to bring in more and varied fish. Depending on the navigation, the site can still appear light and lean, and folks can find what they need. The average visitor doesn't have to know how many pages are lurking beneath the surface.

But .. how about coding.. I was curious... is using Joomla or drupal is better than manually code the sites.. We can build the web customized.. and.. with better security.. No one know your coding when you code by your self.. And with good php knowledge we should be able to make as if the page can be edited manually for each content.

That's still... would require some good coding anyway...
But what confuses is Someone can use cms but also can build it completely custom. which one is preferable.

Great post. I would like to add that, at this point, CMS cannot really replace good old know-how when it comes to marking up content properly and building a website in line with a set of real requirements and goals instead of according to the restrictions imposed by the CMS. There are things that can not, should not and probably never will be done with a "Microsoft Word-like interface" (this seems to be a common and idiotic catch cry of many CMS marketing spiels).

CMS should only be an aid to content creation by people who possess a certain level of technical competence and not (as the article states) try to be a silver bullet to allow any idiot who can type to suddenly become a web designer or editor.

How true! I know of a firm which bought a ready CMS and went ahead with a quick-fix PPC campaign. Problems encountered were many. Too many bugs, it was really frustrating for the technical teams to sort out each bug. Then, there was the issue of notable content mismatch. This firm was into selling cruise holidays. What the borrowed CMS presented, completely contradicted what the firm offered. The in-house editorial team focused on something else not the content on this cruise website. Above all, the purpose for which the website was launched was totally defeated. PPC campaign, I am refering to. The major issue, though clicks were happening in scores everyday, but there are no conversions happening. PPC efforts means both clicks and conversions, not just the earlier which robs campaigners of their money in a huge way.

I am looking for your feedback on my views, mentioned above. For those interested, I can sure give details of this borrowed CMS website, for further study, analysis and feedback.

Congrats on a great post. I think number 6, where you say 'focus on users' is the most important point here. The web seems to be getting bogged down in marketing blah blah blah, and all kinds of new design tricks.

Now, don't get me wrong - I love playing around with both the marketing and the design elements, but I always take the time to ask clients 'What will make YOUR visitors feel comfortable enough to want to stay at your website?' Because if they don't want to stay and read/look/join in, what's the point?
