After listening to this week's Boagworld podcast, I'm wondering if I'm the only one that is still seriously offended by email spam. Paul's tone seemed to imply that email spam is just something we have all learned to live with, whereas comment spam has now become enemy number one. Having recently started receiving loads of spam, I'm now about to declare all-out war on spam!

In the past I've used gmail and other free mail providers and found that their spam filters were good enough for me. But after a year of hosting my own mail server I've recently become inundated with spam emails.

I've looked into spamihilator and procmail but they both seem to take so much configuration and you have to keep on top of them all the time. I'm looking for something that'll basically do all the hard work for me! So I came across a service called Spam Arrest today, and was impressed! Basically the first time someone emails you, they automatically receive an email asking them to verify themselves by clicking on a link (thus confirming they're human). The link takes them to a web page which contains a captcha so the downside is it's not Accessible. Thereafter they can send emails as per usual so this process only has to happen once. Sounds good to me (it isn't free though).

Has anyone else used Spam Arrest or does anyone have good ways of preventing spam?

That method does sound like a nuisance for people who might like to email you. It's a bit like me giving you permission to put a letter through my door.

I expect using client-side spam filters is probably still the best way to go, but I don't really know as I mainly use GMail.

I agree it is a nuisance but I was surprised by how little a nuisance it was! I came across it by sending someone an email and when I received the response it took a few seconds to fill out a captcha and then I knew that from now on I'm on their "approved" list and that they'd receive my email - which is sometimes a worry these days with overly aggressive spam filters!
