We use a CAPTCHA input on one of our sites.

I know for usability its nto the best method but it does prevent spambots/robots using the forms.

    What are your thoughts?

Its not the usability issues, its the accessibility ones. How is a blind user supposed to use that?

    I hate captcha.
If bots/spammers really want to get trough it they will.
Best thing is still, for blogs, moderate everything.

    @Paul aka boagworld;
Some sites use VoiceClips, that's the only solid proof way...
Or maybe you should give them a braille version to print out on one of those special printers - but I don't think that's very likely to ever be implented.

Usability plays a major part to - I am unable to use the Mircosoft Passport one as they have a letter and scribble over it making it impossible to read.

    Example:
    Captcha

Is that an 'I' at the end or a scratch?

To be fair they do have a Wav file you can listen to as well.

But I do agree Paul they are a nightmare.

Graphical CAPTCHAs can be a pain in the arse, and more often than not the ones that are readable are also easily crackable by an OCR script. What do people think about using just plain text CAPTCHAs? There are various ones that use math formulas (very simple ones!) or obvious questions but with random content and structure so as to be less crackable.

For example, why not have a CAPTCHA that asks questions like:

What is the sum of five plus 7?
When the grass is green, what colour is the grass?
I'm thinking of the colour purple - what colour was that?

    ...and so on.

Now to me that seems like a fairly good way of doing things, but I really haven't seen it used too much. Has anyone got any thoughts or experiences in doing it this way?

Andy, that would be a good way but you'll need to fill a database full of those random questions.
Also, this database can't be made opensource or shared.
As soon as multiple websites start using it spammers will easily update there bots to recognize these questions and answer them.

I think when including CAPTCHA there are some guidelines that should be taken into consideration.
First of all think of who your target audience is. If your site is a low profile website with a little over 100 active users (unique hits daily) Your not nessicarily going to need captua on evry log in or comment post, it will come as more as a nuscience. However if you feel they are nessicary provide details about your image for example the CAPTCHA posted by Think above. Look at it. With one like that you would expect a note underneat for something like (Will contain charicters from a-z, A-Z, 0-9. This image will also have 6 charicters) that will help you if you know how many charicters there are going to be.
Keep in mind the COLOUR BLIND, what would you do if you had a visual impairment and you couldent see the letters as you see the text and the background as the same. If your intrested about the topic have a read of this (http://snipurl.com/y1ep).
As mentioned above. Provide an alternative. Audio CAPTCHA are a treat if you are struggling to read it. When it has an overcrowded background its just plain annyoing.
I hope my opinions helped, Jamie.
