    Hi Boagworld,

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a website/piece of software that could be used to host a discussion forum, linked to from an organisation's website? We're looking to migrate onto a SharePoint platform in the future but at the moment the functionality of the site is limiting; so I'm hoping there's an application out there that we could use to tag on some discussion forum functionality to a particular part of the site.

Any ideas, suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Jess

Symphony CMS has a pretty good Forum system but if you want just a raw forum you can tack on to any existing system and have it sit apart... Vanilla. It's what's in use here on Boagworld and I've seen it a few other places. It is far and away my favorite forum.

    Hi Jess,
we use getvanilla.com for this forum.

As for sharepoint, avoid it like the plague. Its fine as long as you don't want to customise it in anyway whatsoever.

    Hope that helps.

Are you on their payroll or something?

Worse. I just really like the way Symphony does things. Symphony doesn't get a lot of press in the dev world and I can't figure out why. So when I get the chance I like to scream, "Symphony rules!"

    OK then.

A +1 for both avoiding Sharepoint and using Vanilla as a forum. If you do go with Vanilla, make sure you download Vanilla 2. It's listed as in development but it's very stable and a lot easier to use than Vanilla 1.

The release version of Vanilla 2 is out now, get it at http://vanillaforums.org

It's literally the future of forums, and boagworld is a really great customization of the Vanilla core (albeit version 1)

There was this one slacker who offered to help get this forum onto Vanilla 2 but he hasn't got off his backside yet. I'm of course talking about myself :)

If anyone feels like taking the BoagWorld look & feel then creating a Vanilla 2 theme with it, you'd be doing us a favour! I will get around to it eventually but I get married next month so that has to come first at the moment.

Thanks very much for the feedback! Sounds like Vanilla is the best option so I'll definitely look into it (love the look of the Boagworld forum, so it's a good advert for it!)
