Dreamhost.com
Excellent rates for the amount of storage and bandwidth offered. Plans range from USD$8.00 per month (with a two-year contract) for 200GB of storage and 2TB monthly bandwidth, (both of which increase weekly) to the business plan at USD$60+ monthly. Supports PHP, MySQL, Ruby, and lots more. The company is run by some very friendly, down-to-earth people. Customer service is fantastic and very prompt. The very few times I had some sort of question about their service, my question was answered literally within hours. My personal recommendation to anyone looking for good reliable hosting.
Downside: control panel is occasionally confusing, especially at first.

1and1.com
From USD$3.00 per month through USD$20.00 per month for some very decent packages, I used 1and1.com as my host for a year before switching to Dreamhost. My switch wasn't a reflection on 1and1, I just wanted to try something different. 1and1 offers both Linux-based and MS-based hosting to suit whichever languages you need support for.
Downsides: Support is generally fairly slow to respond and slow to solve problems; no database support for the cheaper MS packages.

			 Horus network
My 3 websites are currently hosted with them, and even is the rate is a little higher than a normal hosting would be, the service given to the customer is just awesome! You can just send a mail to the technical guy of the team, and he answer you within a day or the same day with a clear and nice answer. And if you have some special needs they will do anything to please you! Here is a little bit of there philosophy taken from their website.
The philosophy of Horus Networks SÃ rl is innovative, based on ecological and human criteria within the framework of sustainable development. At present, seeing profit as the sole objective is a dead-end, which is why we have chosen to orient our policy towards developing our company in a more harmonious way. By respecting the environment and the Human.

Sustainable hosting
This one is cheaper and is also an eco one.
Here is a bit of their philosophy taken from their website:
Sustainable Hosting, LLC has been founded as a joint venture of Earthsite and Holistechnology. I have absolutely nothing good to say about 1and1. I originally hosted based on the fact that they advertised in Linux Forum mag. I've had to jump through hoops from the beginning. I moved my domains to godaddy (great cust. serv.) and I've had very good luck with rogem.net. They've just upgraded to new servers, and I can't beat the prices. I get emails straight from the owners and I feel like part of a family/community.

I have had very bad experiences with 1and1 Hosing with multiple clients. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Powweb Hosting
I have used them for years in the past and I highly recommend them. They are very affordable- only USD $7.77 a month (with various deals depending on the length of time you buy at one time. They have excellent customer service and tech support which is a big help when your first starting out. They currently offer 20GB of storage and over 13GB of bandwidth a day. But this number may increase as they routinely upgrade your package. I haven't had any trouble with them and I have a few clients that currently use them.

I have noticed many recommendations for US based hosting. Is there any reason why a UK hosting is preferable for a site aimed at the UK public?
I understand some US companies do not provide .co.uk domains however that can be managed independently from the hosting. The only other reason I can think is that the location of the site affects the search engine placement regardless of the domain name. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Strongly agree with the above negative comments about 1&1.com. A client had their existing domain names with them and was also paying a lot for hosting that they weren't using. When i tried to leave the leaving procedure was a nightmare. I canceled everything under them and as a result they completely screwed me over changing my domain names to 'Detagged' when i explicitly on the phone had their word this would not happen.

After 2 months of correspondence with Nominet (which cost me more money) i finally got the domains back...
After all this 2 months later 1&1.com charged my client again for hosting... The poor man in the call centre got an ear-full!

(sorry for ranting - they just make me mad)

I've had a good experience with the Heart Internet Reseller package so far! Their offer looks very good on paper with almost unlimited resources for a fixed monthly fee. My sites are only small and therefore not so resource hungry, but I've been very pleased with their infrastructure and control panels etc.

I have seen on some sites that people have had a bad experience with them but I can't complain. I can white label email, webmail, hosting etc. all of which has worked fine. I had 1 or 2 teething problems but the support team were quick to respond and fix any issues.

I've used a few hosts recently and it seems the services vary enormously. When everything is more or less automated I don't understand how some people can have good experiences against others that seem so poor?

I've seen a lot of bad press for 1and1.com, but I've used 1and1.co.uk for the past three years and I don't have any complaints. I have a managed server, a couple of other hosting packages, an exchange account and I always recommend them to clients (and I'd like to point out I'm not an affiliate).

However, I wouldn't recommend them if you think you may need a lot of support. Responses tend to be in the 24 to 48 hours timeframe. This has never been a problem for me as I've never needed urgent support. Another down side is that the servers are in Germany, so that does have a detrimental effect on SEO results when you have a UK specific site.

That said, there seem to be some great hosts mentioned in this thread, so I could be tempted to move :-)

I'm with LondonStone and iBax - I've used 1and1.co.uk for almost 4 years and have nothing but praise.

I should point out I'm an amateur "designer" - I've designed a website for my stepson's football team and nothing else, so my experience is somewhat different to most people on here.

1and1 helped me get up and running, things were fairly prompt. They have a host of features (spot the Marcus-like pun?) and are constantly improving the service. Features include graphics (stock pics and graphics), dymanic data (eg news/sports/weather etc), photo gallery, chat plug-in and newsletter creation.

The one negative side I have - I had an Access Database (don't laugh - I haven't got a budget for anything else!!!) serving team results; whenever I uploaded a new version of this, it was out of action for about 24 hours before magically fixing itself. 1and1 couldn't help in the slightest, saying the prob was at my end, but the error message (in German) referred to an E drive issue (I only had C and D), so it was fairly obviously their issue.

I've noted the comments on 24 hour turnaround for support, but there is a telephone number available and the staff are friendly.

I have noticed many recommendations for US based hosting. Is there any reason why a UK hosting is preferable for a site aimed at the UK public?
I understand some US companies do not provide .co.uk domains however that can be managed independently from the hosting. Hi I currently have two hosting packages with 123-reg and each one has one domain on it. The website hosted or there was designed by a professional for my company. I have recently however had a go at web design myself, I have designed a wesbite which I wish to host and I wanted to use one of my exisiting hosting packages to save buying a new one.

Is it possible and can anyone please explain how, to put this new site up on a new domain (which I have purchased) but on one of these existing hosting packages? 123-reg have been useless I have called/emailed them for about the past 3 days but to no avail.

Thanks very much,

Richard

			 Hi Richard,

I theory you should be able to do this .. but I've never dealt with 123-reg for hosting, only domain names.

What you would normally do is point the DNS (domain name) servers to the web host, and then configure your host to pick up the domain name in question. However, in the case of 123-reg I'm not sure if they don't do something different for their own hosting.

If you get stuck, drop me an email and I'll see if I can set you up some space on my server.

- Rich

I use Dreamhost like several others here. Their support is very responsive and friendly, but I have had a few occasions where the site's gone down on my shared hosting plan, their reason being their server's "memory".

To lupalz and others,

I am a UK resident in the US who recently found a caveat to having your UK Web site hosted by a US company. I'd try find out how likely it is for a user to click on this radio button before ruling out US hosting for a UK-based site. US hosting generally offers a lot more bandwidth. UK companies still talk in gigabytes, whereas US companies talk in terabytes.

I went to a talk at BarcampLondon about hosting and for a VPS (and other types of hosting) we were recommended to look at:
-Managed.com
-Liquidweb.com
I'd be interested to hear if anyone else uses these companies?

To update you all on the previous recommendation I made for 1and1.co.uk let me tell you a little story.....
are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away was a very reliable and reasonably priced hosting company called 1and1.co.uk
(Not to be confused with 1and1.com, who sound appalling!)
To be able to keep thier cost so low, they had to cut a few corners. Thankfully they didn't skimp on hardware, so could never fault them on a server failing, or slow load times.
But they thought thier support staff was too costly. So they outsourced it to India, some very nice ladies and gents, taught to speak polite american, calling us Sir and Mam, and answering any questions we had.
Providing the question you had was on thier clipboard list of 5 things we can help with. Otherwise they would just read out the clipboard answers anyway.
Now I did encounter a small problem. Namely they closed down the email accounts for 50 domains I had hosted with them, without any warning or notification. Reason being.... suspected spam abuse from 1 account.
Abuse department is in Germany. India don't have contact number or email for them, it's in the notification email that they allegedly sent to the account they closed! They can't give out such information over the phone.
After over a week of just trying to contact them, finally got through and sorted out the problem. It was just me testing a sub&#115cription newsletter &#115cript to myself that triggered the spam lockdown!

Needless to say I have 49 irate clients who were without email for a week.

Sorry about the long post, but I thought this word of warning might save someone else the nightmare of frustration I had to endure with 1and1.co.uk. You buy cheap- You buy twice!

I've since tried a couple of other hosting companies. One was total rubbish, the other is a breath of fresh air.
I wont post up the company name yet, as I've only been with them about a month, and want to do a proper road test before I sing thier praises, so far they tick every box though. Email me if anyone does want the details beforehand.

			 Hostgator Sucks
;) Richquicks blog

I'd reccomend Bluehost.com - their support (live support) is amazing, you'll be answered in seconds - and their spec is unbeatable - they are not just the oversold too-good-to-be-true company. You only have to look at the CEOs blog to see that www.mattheaton.com

I have been with them for 4 years, even though I have two dedicated servers now that we manage, I still keep that for testing puropuses, and because it's so cheap. Pay for 2 years in one go and you'll get it amazingly cheap, it's worth every penny. Do consider it :)

Well, you know my thoughts on Hostgator.

I'd recommend Donhost's reseller package - it's not as feature-laden as some, but the reliability is superb and there's 24/7 telephone support from people who actually know about servers.

My only bug-bear is that you can't do mod_rewrite on their reseller package (you can if you upgrade to a managed server)

Thanks for the feedback Sam and richquick. Sorry for the late reply, I now realise I wasn't subscribed to this discussion (I thought I was). It's a shame as Hostgator's features fitted my requirements, whereas Donhost is too restrictive for my needs (no SSH for example). I'll add Bluehost to my list.

Cheers guys.

			 @Sam,

Ok I've just done a livechat with bluehost and it looks promising. Pity they only allow one cpanel account and no WHM and they won't provide uptime records, but the rest seems to suit my requirements so they're a contender. Here's bits of the livechat (I had to edit it as it's longer than the forum limit for a post):

Ryan Behrman [15:05]: Hi, do you have cpanel or plesk?
jlarsen [15:05]: we have cpanel
Ryan Behrman [15:07]: do you have whm with cpanel so that it can be used as a reseller account?
jlarsen [15:08]: We only give one cpanel login per hosting account and all domains are controlled through that contol panel.
Ryan Behrman [15:10]: Do you allow editing of PHP.ini?
jlarsen [15:10]: Yes you have full access to the phpini file
Ryan Behrman [15:11]: Am I allowed to switch between PHP4 and PHP5 or do I have to request this on signup?
jlarsen [15:11]: You can switch one the account is created if you need ot.
Ryan Behrman [15:16]: What are the payment terms (monthly/yearly)?
jlarsen [15:18]: Bluehos.com Pricing Structure.
================================

3 Month account is $59.85 - $9.95 a Month x 3 + $30.00 setup fee (+$10.00 for domain name if needed)
6 Month account is $83.70 - $8.95 a Month x 6 + $30.00 setup fee (+$10.00 for domain name if needed)
12 Month account is $95.40 - $7.95 a Month x 12, Domain included (no setup fee)
24 Month account is $166.80 - $6.95 a Month x 24, Domain included (no setup fee)

Hosting accounts are paid for up front. You can cancel your account within the first 30 days and get a full refund. After the first 30 days you can still cancel your account any time and recieve a pro-rated refund. Setup fees are non-refundable.

Ryan Behrman [15:19]: Do you send a warning when the bandwidth limit is approached, so the customer isn't hit with a huge bill at the end of the month? Is there a way to monitor bandwidth through the cpanel?
[15:20]: ... and will you pull the site down if it goes over the limit?
jlarsen [15:21]: You can monitor you bandwidth and we do send warnings when you are getting close. We do shut the site down if it goes over the limit
Ryan Behrman [15:21]: 24/7/365 support? Do you have stats on your response times? Do you have a guaranteed response time?
jlarsen [15:24]: We do not have a quaranteed response time we try and answer all tickets in 24 hours and calls we try and have as low a wait time as possilbe.
[15:24]: We do have 24 hour technical support
Ryan Behrman [15:26]: Do you use a premium rate number for technical queries? Is there a way to phone from the UK without huge call charges?
jlarsen [15:27]: We only have an 888 number that is free in the US.
Ryan Behrman [15:27]: Can you provide recent uptime records?
jlarsen [15:30]: We do not have a record that I could send
Ryan Behrman [15:31]: Do you have an uptime guarantee in your SLA?
jlarsen [15:31]: We do it is a 99.9% uptime
[15:32]: http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=458
Ryan Behrman [15:35]: I must say your knowledgebase (and its search) look good. Who wrote the articles (staff or customers?)
Ryan Behrman [15:39]: Great. Do you have examples of sites hosted with bluehost?
jlarsen [15:39]: You can view a demo of our cpanel under our Features page there is a demo login.
jlarsen [15:39]: There are some listed http://www.bluehost.com/comments.html
Ryan Behrman [15:40]: how many staff do you have? and how many customers?
jlarsen [15:41]: We have around 200 agents and we have 329436 domains hosted with us right now.
Ryan Behrman [15:42]: Do you have physical access to the server rack?
jlarsen [15:42]: We have access to all the servers. They are owned by us.
Ryan Behrman [15:43]: What linux distros do you use?
jlarsen [15:44]: We use CentOS 4.4
Ryan Behrman [15:44]: Do you allow editing of hosts file and httpd.conf file?
jlarsen [15:45]: You can edit the .htaccess to make changes that you would to the httpd.conffile and you can edit the php,ini file. Since it is shared hosting we can't edit the httpd.conf
Ryan Behrman [15:46]: Do all of the support staff have great knowledge like you do? Or are you a unique case?
jlarsen [15:46]: Actually most probably know more then I do.
[15:46]: I mainly work sales
Ryan Behrman [15:46]: Thanks for your help. I will strongly consider bluehost. Do you have any promo code that I could use?
jlarsen [15:47]: We don't have any promo codes....sorry.
[15:47]: You are very welcome
Ryan Behrman [15:47]: That's no problem. Thanks again. Have a good day.
jlarsen [15:48]: You have a great day as well.

Well, they seemed to have the odd "router" issues and downtime here and there in the earlier times when I was with them., the last year though has been faultless, Matt Heaton is the guy to talk too, and read his blog to see the imporovements speeding up and oimporving his servers. They also run from a dedicated datacentre fixing problems with hardware very fast.

Upsides, well they have an amazing plan, ruby support etc, very responsive support, reliable service uptime 99%+ (I use free imdependent monitoring, there's a years free trial of one at pingdom) :)

I dont think you'll find a reseller for that cheap that is not oversold and as good as what bluehost offer in terms of stability (long standing company with a reputable, open and friendly CEO who has good values (see his blog and chat to him on AIM), and also 24/7 very responsive support.

Thanks for the reply, Sam. I tested their support via skype call today and they responded fairly quickly.
I do think there is a bit of overselling though, because they claim to guarantee 99.9% uptime but they can't provide uptime records and if they don't achieve 99.9% then there is no compensation (so in effect the guarantee is just a word of mouth guarantee and there are no implications).
Another minor downside is they don't support hosted subversion.

They're still high on my list though, and they may well prevail!

(i had taken off other apps too!)
anyway add to this they arent even now charging my correct account and you can see why im a little annoyed.

i like easyspaces individual hosting packages but im beginning to loathe thier server packs.
even their virtual servers are being silly for me right now. i just dont get it, for such a "professional" (which i say lightly) company who iv dealt with for over 5 years (yes i was a young novice running a footie website for my dads friends team, it did and does pay well) to suddenly become so....rubbish in my opinion is almost scary.

			 Anybody tried www.mediatemple.net

I always seem to find that most sites hosted with them have an 'in partnership with (mt)' on there site, and I've always been wandering wether they force you to have this, or people just like them so much!
I am currently with hostgator, after being with UK2.NET for 2 days, but hostgator's account often errors out 500 for me, which is not ideal, FTP is sluggish, and keeps timing out (they had to remove from the firewall once), and no subversion or SSH :-(
Can anyone recommend a decent host, for around the hostgator (shared) price range (must do .htaccess, a lot of MySQL databases, and unlmitedish domains.)

I can't recommend Clook highly enough. If you want a rock-solid LAMP stack, then they are just perfect. The servers are extremely reliable and fast, they're easy-to-use (cpanel and WHM with Fantastico), the support is superb, they're very transparent and honest, they don't oversell servers, and they're just generally good guys running a slick, professional outfit. If you frequent their support forum, you tend to get to know them by first name, which is something I value (real people as opposed to anonymous support personnel).

Another benefit they offer is second-to-none email spam protection. I've yet to find any other host providing anything nearly as effective. Their email servers are running as a cluster with their own custom configuration of multiple spam-killers (like SpamAssassin). And believe me, it really works. I can't tell you just how much clients *LOVE* this particular aspect. It's a huge plus to the service.

My only criticism of Clook is that they don't offer SSH support. Their argument against allowing SSH is that it's reducing the vectors of attack and helps maintain server stability. It seems to be a reasonable tactic, but if you require SSH, look elsewhere. Plus having to rely on FTP (they do offer secure FTP, which is good) in this day and age is not ideal, but it's definitely not a huge disadvantage.

I have had a reseller account with them for many years (having previously been with Fasthosts) and I happily host many client sites with them. I trust them totally with my clients' businesses. 'Nuff said.

Oh, and they're UK based with cracking pings (their servers are placed in a datacenter in London docklands).

http://www.clook.net

They have open forums, so you can ask questions, see their uptime record, see what network problems they've had and, crucially, see their approach to handling them:

https://www.clook.info/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=129

Here's an example of a CMS (Textpattern) driven site hosted with them so you can get a feel for the speed:

http://www.wildrye.info/

Charles

Hi, I have a question about hosting. Recently I did a site for Just Oil which is hosted using our reseller account with Heart Internet.

I am perfectly happy with Heart and have experienced no down time yet on any of the sites hosted. However, the company that did the original Just Oil site have contacted the company I work for claiming our hosting is awful and the server the site is on could be hosting 1000's of sites and their dedicated server would be much better. I realize that some of what they were saying is sour grapes because they didn't get the contract but I wondered how much of it was.

If Heart boast 99.9% uptime how much better is a dedicated server and how could they tell find out about our hosting when they didn't know the company name or anything?

Thanks
Kirsty

The host I would normally use is here in the US and I'm not sure if that's the right choice for him. Also, I don't think he'd want to pay for Media Temple.

Some requirements I know we'll need are:
- PHP 5.2 or above
- PHP's LibXML module, with the XSLT extension enabled (--with-xsl)
- MySQL 4.1 or above
- An Apache webserver
- Apache's mod_rewrite module
- Either e-mail accounts or the ability to use Google Apps.

I'm using www.wesh.co.uk at the moment and haven't had any problems at all. Customer service is very swift and helpful and the hosting is not oversold - which means more quality bandwidth.

For £4 a month I'm hosting 5 sites already (which can go upto 11) with 100mb space and 2gb bandwidth...more than enough for my needs and hosting small business sites and a personal site too.

It's ideal for starting out on and has served me well for that purpose.

There is no WDM and a root account is defined with added domains running under the subdomain of the root - which doesn't effect how you see the url at all.

Does anyone have any experience with HostClear? They offer some pretty good packages and I'm still hunting around for a UK-based host for my friend. Their site looks pretty good and so does their offer for shared hosting. I'm just waiting to hear that their customer support is crap or something like that.

Clook looks great. How do you find their transfer limits? They say 10/20/40GB for their shared packages. I guess I'm rather spoiled as my host says unlimited. Though, that being said, I bet if I put it to the test they' get upset.

The part that makes me double-think is that he's an artist so there's going to be a lot of images. Food for thought, I guess.

Yeh the transfer limit is a little on the small side. Its good if you know on average how much traffic your getting in. But like you said its an unknown factor at the moment.

You thinking of doing full screen images to show off his work I take it?

I've been playing around with that lovely thing known as exchange rates and you know what's funny? For the price of most UK hosting packages my clients can afford Media Temple and they have a toll-free UK contact number which, if I understand correctly, is supposed to be manned 24/7 (though, it probably just goes to the US).

I've contacted them and they do provide .co.uk domains (whether or not my UK clients go for them is another matter entirely) but that they don't provide any other specific SEO tactics for targeting countries, like a UK IP address for your site and similar. At least, not on shared hosting packages they do not.

I'm not too worried about the speed latency of transferring from a server in the US vs. in the UK for a variety of reasons but one that does slightly concern me is the SEO of it. I don't want my UK clients to be penalized for having a US host when it comes to page rank.

I know that on Google's Webmaster Tools you can specify the country of focus and that Google takes a long look at your domain and the actual content of your site. My question is, would these things in conjunction with standard SEO practices be enough to counter-act any negatives to SEO that having the host in a different country might be?

Well i have a few UK stores on some of my US hosting blocks (using .co.uk domains) and they show up fine in UK only listings. There doesnt seem to be any penalty as long as its a .co.uk domain with its targetting in Google Webmaster Tools set to the UK.

So you will be fine :)
