On the "The Home Page is Dead" bit.....

I totally think it is all about landing pages now. I should really describe a landing page now shouldn't I.

Here is an example....

A website for a hardware store. You type into Google the search term 'nails'. Lets say this hardware stores site comes up first in the list so you click it. You wouldn't expect to be taken to the home page and then have to navigate to the page on nails, you would expect Google to take you directly to a page on nails. This is what happens these days, very rarely do users know the domain of the site the want to access the home page.

Less focus on the home page and more on landing pages has various benefits. I could write a blog post on the subject but just to mention a few benefits...... Its easier to optimize (SEO) a page for one subject rather than multiple subjects. It will also mean less fights over screen real estate etc.... I could go on and on. One of the disadvantages is that you could end up with lots of landing pages to maintain and a very complex site architecture.

I think the home page is almost dead, but not quite there yet. I think it is going to be like an old pet...... old, kinda useless but just will never die. Maybe one day it will.
