.net podcast launches

Published on: January 22, 2007 by Paul Boag

Today is an exciting day for me because it sees the launch of the first ever episode of the .net podcast.

I have been mulling over the idea of a panel based show on web design for a while. Although I love doing the boagworld podcast I am conscious that it only provides my own somewhat limited perspective on the industry. I wanted to create a show that brought together some of the leading lights in web design to discuss the big issues of the week.

I had considered starting the show myself but wasn’t sure if I had the clout to attract the calibre of guest I wanted. I was therefore really excited when Dan Oliver, the editor of .net magazine, approached me in regards to producing a podcast for the mag.

I have worked with Dan before on the Practical Web Design Show and he was very open to my ideas. Before I knew it I was lining up guests for the first show.

I have to confess that even though this has been by idea, I have been somewhat terrified at the technical challenges involved. Organising a five way skype call that produces decent quality audio is a challenge at the best of times let alone when you don’t want to keep people hanging around while you twiddle with your settings.

However, it hasn’t come out bad. So, without further ado I give you the .net podcast.

Let me know what you think!

I think the popularity of the podcast has caused the .net servers to be overloaded. Be patient.

Same theme tune as PWD mag podcast :P

A great podcast covering some nice magazine related topics!

Alot of people in there, how did you do such a big skype conference haha... some of that usual skype distortion but its amazing considering the amount of people!

Nice also to hear all the guests, and do keep it up :)

Just like to offer my congrats on the new podcast. I love the panel format.

With regard to your discussion on supporting legacy browsers, if users could not or would not upgrade from IE5 to IE6 then I see no reason why they would upgrade to IE7. If like me you have to support IE5 users already, then it would be conceivable that you will be supporting them for some time to come, forced to spend considerably more time and money supporting the last three versions of IE.

I would like to say enough is enough at some point in the future and only supply the raw HTML to IE 5, but feel this would confuse and possibly alienate these users.

What are your thoughts on this matter.

    Cool show, really enjoyed!

At the start I didn't think it would work with that many people but seemed to flow smoothly. Was there much editing involved?

You mentioned the damn iPhone again! Grrr!

Apologies for being impatient earlier, but it wasn't an instant download. It must be instant, damnit :)

    Look forward to the next.

    - amd.

I'm convinced Christian called Paul borderline artistic on the podcast ;)
