Will be good to have some slightly more practical aspects to design and development. I've also enjoyed Craig's article on .net as well as some of his blog posts. Keep em coming Craig it's time us nerds had some info not just colours and shapes talk. Heehehe.. Keep up the podcasts guys they keep me chuckling on my long commute..

Hey Guys,

Great episode!

I heard you make mention of browser upgrades.

"Why wouldn't everyone just make the latest update to their browsers."

Here are a couple of reasons that I've come across.

In a large office space, often IT teams will block any software upgrades on employees machines. While I'm sure this is for security and debugging purposes, it does prevent several individuals from appreciating the latest and greatest experience that a particular web site might be able to offer.

Some companies either provide or use online software that can only run on particular browsers. I've recently used a CMS and some reporting software that can sadly only run in IE6 :-(

That's my 2 bits!
Keep up the great work!

I held off on upgrading to FF3 from FF2 for awhile because some of my plugins weren't supported or switched from free to payed. I use Pearl Page Saver, View Source Chart and Firebug.

I think all of those have free FF3 counterparts now, but Pearl Page Saver is now commercial. It's something I used everyday so I should probably stop being a tightwad and just buy the developers a few cups of coffee.

On notebooks - I was once stuck without a notebook on a late night train from Paddington to Reading. I had a really good idea and only a pen. I asked the gentlemen opposite for an unused piece of his Financial Times and began scribbling on it. That drawing became the core of my PhD. Being scatterbrained, I probably would not have remembered it the next day (or by the time we had passed Slough) but the act of writing it down comitted it to memory.

The moral (if there is such a thing for a little snippet) is that you don't always need a nice moleskin or A4 pad, you just need something to scribble on. It's the act of capturing the idea that is often most important, not what you write it on.

I still have the piece of FT, folded neatly into the back of my thesis.

Good move to get more development related info into the show, its been a little weak in that area (although it's been a great insight into design for us developers).
Here's a brain dump of article ideas that listeners may find interesting:
Choosing a technology, LAMP or ASP.NET
Compare PHP Frameworks (Zend/CakePHP etc)
Javascript Frameworks (jQuery, Dojo etc)
ASP.NET MVC compared with WebForms
Cloud computing
Advantages of an n-tiered software architecture
SOAP vs REST

Maybe a developer could explain these to Paul for the benefit of the listeners?

I must say I have to agree... some very insightful points put forward by that developer chap!

I'm intrigued as to what kind of developer content the Boagworld audience would like to hear from us (Headscapes Dev team). Maybe some specific developer based questions that we could address?

It is out intention to have one of our developers on most weeks from now on. The reason he didn't talk much was because it was his first time! I didn't want to put him in a position of doing a whole section straight out of the gate!

I say put Craig on another show and let him talk again. It's nice to hear opinions from a developer. You had him on the show and hardly let him talk :)

You where asking about companies using Twitter well. I've been working on a website that is going to be using the Akamai caching platform. I was having problems integrating the EPiServer CMS with it and Tweeted about my frustration.
Within in minutes I had a reply from one of their support developers who had helped me out.
Technical support seem great uses of Twitter. As a large number of the Twitter user base are technical people and we are likely to Tweet when frustrated. It seems a good idea for IT companies to monitor Twitter for their product names and offer help when needed.
