A well thought out discussion, Paul. Thanks for mentioning Designers Inhouse - any inhouse designers reading this are welcome to sign up and contribute.
Great song from Drew too...it's going to be stuck in my head every time I design now!

Thanks again for the shout outs gents! The commentary at the start of the episode put a massive smile on my face! Actually, it didn't take that long at all ... I'd say two evenings or so. I did intend to send it for Christmas, but then it sat idle for ages :) Hope it brings you tons of new listeners!!

Great topic. I used to work for an in-house design team and now work for a Web design firm. All your points are well stated. I know that different organizations have different needs, but I think our publishing house would have done well to outsource major Web site/brand site designs and redesigns to firms, and let in-house staff work on HTML marketing emails, site maintenance, the array of Web forms, banner ads, and promotions that came up weekly, etc. Instead, in-house staff did everything, and quality/creativity wasn't that of a specialized firm.

First off, great post. With many businesses going online and their online presence growing, their company’s websites are becoming more and more important of an asset. But like you said, it can cost lots of money to get a good site designed and built. I had a similar problem with my startup which was web based, but we had little initial funding to get the site done. There was no way we could have afforded a high end designer or a big time professional to develop our back end and ecommerce so we used getacoder.com which serves as an auction site for specific web based jobs you may have. We posted what we needed for our business website and individual coders bid on how much they would do the project for. It worked out great.
