Boagworld is the blog of web strategist Paul Boag who lives in the heart of rural Dorset (hence the cows). He produces a weekly podcast with UX consultant Marcus Lillington on building and running websites. They also run the web design agency Headscape.

Demystifying the “duplicate content penalty”

Duplicate on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results. If your site suffers from duplicate content issues, and you don’t follow the advice listed above, we do a good job of choosing a version of the content to show in our search results.

I get asked about this all the time by clients worried about it. Hopefully this will put people’s minds at rest.

    The question I get asked is: “What if my content is to be found on MULTIPLE sites – what will happen?” – e.g. will only the page containing the dublicate content be punished/neglected in some way – or will the entire website/domain suffer from this..
    I’m gald to see that this is also (partly) answered in the above post from Google and the links from it.. :-)
