Thanks for sharing this. I love your blog (you helped me do my first usability test, which was so awesome). I've been trying to dig up research on the placement of calls to action because I have a conundrum. Our redesigned site (as yet to launch) will have an image slider so we can showcase important content with calls to action. It's a government site, so a great majority of the actions will be things like getting more info (Learn More), searching for data (Search Now), completing a transaction (Get Started), etc.

My question is this -- and I have yet to find any research on the subject -- with an image slider, where the text and photography will be different from slide to slide, what's the better practice?
Should the call to action button be placed on the image in the best place for it given the text and photo, or should we try to design each image so that the call to action is in the same place on each image? I struggle with this, because I could put the call to action in the same place on most slides, but some images just won't accommodate the button in the same place every time.

But what's more user-friendly? Seeing the button in the same place on each slide, or is it OK for it to move since only one image will be displayed on screen at a time? Is there benefit to the unexpected location of the button, or is it a detriment?

By the way, I also struggle with whether the typography should be the same from slide to slide, or whether it should be chosen in context with the content. I started by limiting myself to a few font pairings, but now I worry that I should just choose one headline font and one subtitle font for all slides. The problem is that our content varies so much, that the individual sliders look better -- communicate better -- when I'm not consistent!

Very insightful interview, gives some great pointers. Especially the fact that the way zappo's reduces the buying threshold is something I, and i'm sure may, have never realized.
