Good article. I think an important caveat is necessary in this discussion though...tools are often confused with ability. An online testing tool does not make the user a UX professional suddenly, just like giving someone photoshop does not make you a designer. There's a huge difference between a well conducted study planned and run by someone with experience training and education vs. these tools.

Great article. I always think that, regardless of the tool or technique, that the most important thing about user testing is that you do some. It's surprising how many firms just don't bother.

I'd like to suggest an additional tool for people to consider, and I will state that as I created it I am somewhat biased, but http://kupima.com is a variant on the UserTesting style, although it concentrates on enriching the actual task definitions and allows for more complex questionnaires (with different question types, the results of which are also summarised and charted for you across responses). It also does the integrated screen recording of users taking tests (with audio of course) and you can either use our user panel (with pre-screened users) or send an invite link out to your own users (and save some money as the user panel don't then need to be involved and therefore paid!)

If anyone would like to give it a try, I've a special discount code to persuade you :)

25% Discount code (only for boagworld readers): KBBOAGW25DX

The code will only work for the first 25 tests (type it in at the payment page) so don't delay...
