Where AI Runs Out
AI is genuinely good at the first half of a leadership problem. Give it a situation and you’ll get options, frameworks, and a decent first draft.
Every one of those problems has a second half though, and it’s the political one. Who will block this, what it costs you to lose, and whether this is the fight worth picking this quarter.
That second half is where I come in. 32 years across hundreds of organizations means I have usually watched your situation play out somewhere else, and I’ll tell you honestly how it went.
- The stakeholder who blocks everything. AI hands you influencing techniques from a book. It has no idea that this particular director says no to everything he didn’t originate, so the technique you need is a different one entirely.
- Deciding what to do next. AI will validate whichever option you describe with the most enthusiasm. It can’t tell you which of the five is realistic with the team and the budget you actually have.
- Making the case for change. AI will write you a persuasive business case in seconds. It doesn’t know the one number your finance director actually trusts, or which colleague will kill your plan in a side conversation you never hear about.
- Knowing when you’re the problem. AI will never tell you that your plan is the weak link. I will, and then we’ll work out what to do about it.
